Steve from Team iDemise has recently given me a copy of their new guide, “Questup”, which is a really nice in-game leveling guide with a twist.

Team iDemise have been in the WoW leveling guide market for some time, but recently they’ve come up with a new and different way to approach leveling guides.

Most leveling guides are human edited – which means the author will sit down and tediously map out the exact fastest way to get to level 80.

Questup follows a different idea however, which means that you’ll follow the leveling path of other people in WoW.

Now, I don’t profess to know exactly how Questup does this, but the programmer responsible says that basically it gathers the data from the players who are leveling the fastest, and tells you which quests they do, and which ones they abandon.

This means that rather than following a human edited guide, you’re following a guide that uses statistics from hundreds or more likely thousands of other players.

The guide presents this info to you in the game, so rather than alt tabbing to read a level guide outside of the game, you get a window which presents your current objective, and you get a waypoint arrow which tells you exactly where to go and how long it’ll take to get you there.

Its very easy to use, but unfortunately like all leveling guides on the market, it can take a bit of tweaking once you first start, because you might be on quest a, b and c, in Feralas, while the guide says the best and fastest quests are at x, y and z in Tanaris Desert.

So depending on where you are, you might need to spend a bit of time running to a new location… but from the usage I’ve given the guide, you’ll save so much time this initial setup is well worth it. I’ve used this guide for a few levels with a low level Shaman, and the guide looked good and played well. No slow or hard to get to quests were included, and it didn’t send me inefficiently zigzagging all over the zone.

Like all in-game guides, initial set up can be tricky
You’ll level faster than Blizzard intended, so professions can be hard to keep up.
No options to buy extra gold, pvp or profession info (Dave Farrel’s guide is good for that kind of stuff)

Just after leveling info though? Questup gets my thumbs up!

If you’re wondering about the differences between the Team iDemise & Joana leveling guides for World of Warcraft, I’ve used them both, and these are the basic differences I’ve found. I’ll also talk about what guide will suit what kind of player best.

My bullet points are coded – green means that the feature is unique, and that the other guide doesn’t have it.

Team iDemise Leveling Guide Review:

The best thing about the iDemise QuestUp guide is that they track other fast leveling players in World of Warcraft, and compute the fastest time based only on the players who make it through WoW the fastest. I was initially skeptical about this guide, and am still a bit hesitant about the automation which controls which quests you do, but after using this newly released mod myself I came around a bit. The interface is great, easy to use, and it automatically tracks your progress. The quests suggested were similar to other quests I’ve done with other leveling guide, which seems to reinforce the fact that the guide is in fact calculating the fastest path.

With this face-off the question to me isn’t, “which is faster?”, because I think its too close to call.

Its “do I want to follow a route honed by the Horde expert, or by a computer that follows and copies the fastest gamers?”. Yes, its true — I’m not convinced by the idea behind this guide, but knowing that you’re following only the fastest leveler’s routes as determined by a computer program is very appealing and hard to fault.

Best for those who like an automated guide, and want a no frills fast leveling guide. People with Alliance alts might also consider taking this guide over Joana.

Joana’s Guide Review:

The best thing about Joanas’s 1-80 Horde Leveling Guide is the fact that your guide is a Horde only player. Joana has only ever optimized his guides for Horde, and knows the faction’s ins and outs well. Needless to say if you want to use your guide for Alliance toons with Joana you’re out of luck.

Joana also caters to the retro market, or people who don’t like in game guides, and provides an html and printable version of his 1-80 leveling guide.

So Should You Buy Joana’s Guide Or Go With Team iDemise?
If you’re ONLY after a leveling guide for Horde, and don’t mind a slightly dated looking user interface, you’d do well to go with Joana’s Guide. Joana is one of the oldest guide owners on the internet, and has been playing WoW since day one. This match up is one of the hardest to call for me. Both guides are guaranteed for 60 days… so there’s always the option of trying before you buy!
